The Children's Evaluation Network (CEN) offers a range of evaluation and consultation services that,
individually or in combination, are tailored to meet a child and family's specific needs. Close collaboration with school
teams and other professionals involved in the education, support and/or care of the child is key to our service model,
in order to ensure that appropriate interventions can be identified and effectively implemented to maximise the child's developmental
potential, learning and adjustment.
Neuropsychological
Evaluations
These provide a comprehensive examination of the major areas
of a child's functioning, to include many, if not all, of the following: cognition, pre-academic/academic proficiency, language
and visual processing, memory and learning, approach to task/executive control skills, fine motor efficiency, pragmatic abilities
(communication, social, self-care), behavioural presentation, and emotional adjustment. The breadth and depth of a child's
neuropsychological evaluation is contingent on his or her age, challenges, and referral question.
Core components of a neuropsychological evaluation at
the CEN are as follows:
· Review of educational and service records
and other relevant documentation.
· Intake session with the parents regarding
referral question and history (60 minutes).
· Two testing sessions with the child (2 to
3 hours each) – an additional testing session may be required contingent on the child’s difficulties, need for
in depth exploration etc.
· Feedback session for discussion of the test
findings and recommendations with the parents (90 minutes).
· Generation of a comprehensive report outlining
referral question, relevant history, test findings, clinical impressions, and recommendations.
· Telephone consultation with the child’s
teachers and other relevant professionals, as needed.
· Availability for follow up questions over
time, via telephone, email and office visits.
Cognitive and/or
Academic Assessments
These provide a thorough exploration of a child's intellectual
profile, and/or academic profile as pertains to the core subjects areas of Reading, Mathematics and Written Language. The
breadth and depth of the testing conducted is contingent on his or her age, challenges, and referral question.
Core components of a cognitive and/or academic assessment
at the CEN are as follows:
· Review of educational and service records
and other relevant documentation.
· Intake session with the parents regarding
referral question and history (45 minutes).
· One testing session with the child (1 to 3
hours, depending on type of assessment required).
· Feedback session for discussion of the test
findings and recommendations with the parents (1 hour).
· Generation of a comprehensive report outlining
referral question, relevant history, test findings, clinical impressions, and recommendations.
· Telephone consultation with the child’s
teachers and other relevant professionals, as needed.
· Availability for follow up questions over
time, via telephone, email and office visits.
Preschool / Kindergarten
Screenings
These provide insight into a child's foundational skills
as pertain to the areas of: general knowledge and comprehension, pre-academic proficiency, speech and language functioning,
gross and fine motor efficiency, social-emotional adjustment, and self-care abilities. Findings are used to inform a child's
readiness for preschool and/or kindergarten.
Core components of a preschool / kindergarten screening
at the CEN are as follows:
· Review of educational and service records
and other relevant documentation.
· Brief intake session with the parents regarding
history and current presentation (30 minutes).
· One testing session with the child (up to
1 hour).
· Summary report outlining relevant history,
test findings, clinical impressions, and recommendations.
· Consultation with the child’s parents
and head teacher for discussion of test findings.
· Availability for follow up questions over
time via telephone, email and office visits.
In all of its evaluations, the CEN is committed to providing high quality care in a manner that is flexible
and sensitive to a child and family's individual needs and schedules. We do our best to make the process feel as supportive
and stress-free to the child as possible, and to have both parents and professionals feel that they are active participants
in a collaborative effort to better understand, assist and intervene on the child's behalf.
School Observations
These provide information on a child's functioning and success
within the natural context of his or her school environment. Children are observed in one or more contexts (e.g., the general
classroom, learning support sessions, recess) and at particular times (e.g., as they begin their day, as they transition
from one activity to another), the specific nature of which is guided by the referral question. The main goal
is typically to determine the goodness of fit between the child's profile and needs and the programming and assistance being
provided to him or her. In so doing, the findings help to gauge the appropriateness of a child's educational placement and
to guide intervention planning both in and out of school.
Core components of a school observation conducted by the CEN are as follows:
· Review of educational and service records
and other relevant documentation.
· Consultation with parents regarding referral
question and history (45 minutes).
· Consultation with teachers regarding their
impressions of the child and the appropriate window in the school day within which to conduct the observation.
· School observation of the child (2 hours).
· Feedback session for discussion of the school
observation findings and recommendations with the parents (1 hour).
· Generation of a comprehensive report outlining
referral question, relevant history, school observations, clinical impressions, and recommendations.
· Telephone consultation with the child’s
teachers and other relevant professionals, as needed.
· Availability
for follow up questions over time, via telephone, email and office visits.
Clinical Consultation
This service provides an independent perspective on a wide
variety of issues and concerns, thereby offering additional support to parents' and professionals' collaborative efforts
to promote a child's development, learning and adjustment.
Clinical consultation from the CEN is requested for a number of reasons:
·
Review of
educational records and other relevant documentation.
·
Attendance
at educational team meetings to discuss test findings and/or assist with programme planning, placement decisions, and ancillary
service determination.
·
Brain storming
and discussion with parents, teachers and other professionals regarding how to address clinical concerns.
Educational Services
These provide
expertise and guidance to students, parents, teachers and other relevant professionals on a wide range of educational topics,
with the goal of promoting a child's learning and achievement through appropriately tailored and effectively implemented instruction.
Educational
services offered by the CEN include consultation on areas such as:
·
programme placement and appropriateness
of supports.
